I can understand your reasons for the change but your initial comments were offensive. The reason I found them to be so was because it has been my experience in life that not everyone agrees with how we might feel and I think you could have found another way to make your statement without being insulting. I am sure this comment will not affect you one way or the other. I just know that if you were trying to sway an older person to see your way or someone deeply rooted in the traditional baby shower thing you were actually pretty insulting-you may not have intended to be but I found it offensive and I am not the traditional baby shower person either.

Love the blessing ideas--beads, string, candles. Wondering about a "dream catcher" idea I have, as I plan a Mother Blessing event for a pregnant friend who has requested this approach.

I've made dream catchers with students, adding in beads, shells, feathers, etc. My students and I made an all-class one with a hula-hoop wrapped in natural cloth for the outer circle, and a tapestry ring for the inner circle, using jute for the webbing frame. Each student made his or her own, using a wooden tapestry ring for the outside, and a wooden curtain rod ring for the inner circle. (Students loved looking up at the large dream catcher hanging in the classroom, and that's why we made the smaller ones, as each child really wanted to take the big one home and hang it above their bed!)

Could the dream catcher idea be adapted to the Mother Blessing approach? What are some thoughts on this possibility, or is it not perhaps a good idea. I was just recalling that in my labor it helped to have a focal point, and I was thinking that a dream catcher might be something that could be used as such.

Thank you so much for this article, my step-mom had a mother blessing with my younger brother and attending that ceremony was such a moving experience for me that when she offered to throw one this year as I enter the world of motherhood I jumped at the chance! My other relatives are a little confused and wary of the experience but, I am hopeful that they will feel a similar connection to such a wonderful time that I have in the past. I've sent them the link to your article in further hopes of explaining what will be going on.

Thanks again!
